so i just found out that the ending was actually meant to be different! the only reason it ended in the way that it did is because the writer was not able to write a happy ending for two gay characters, they were supposed to live happliy in japan in the end which is very cute :)))). i think its because of it being originally made in the 80’s but i have not read the manga so maybe they do get their happily ever after! but yeah i hope that soothes your poor souls a little! <3
